Purpose of role

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join us as the Head of Group Tax responsible for the efficient and effective delivery of tax compliance and in-house consultancy needs for Dentons UKIME. The role holder will be responsible for managing our firm’s current in-house tax team and external advisors and for also identifying and implementing appropriate best-in-class processes to ensure a high quality of service is provided to our business in the course of its implementation of is five-year strategic growth plans..

The role will work closely with the Head of Finance (UK) and Finance Director for Middle East to ensure that Dentons UKIME remains tax compliant and efficiently structured.


This is a pivotal role that will proactively manage the firm’s tax affairs, evaluate/deal with individual partner tax arrangements, tax compliance (including reserving), manage tax risks, and the delivery of high-quality tax advisory planning advice.  The role will oversee and manage the completion of all tax compliance obligations across our geographic footprint including income and corporation tax computations and returns, tax balances in statutory accounts, tax provisioning, VAT, payroll, double tax relief claims and tax payments.

This role requires an experienced tax professional already acting in a senior advisory role either within a professional practice or a large complex international business.


In addition to managing the day-to-day workload and service provided by their supporting team and our external advisors, the main duties and responsibilities for the role are as follows:

  • Developing and maintaining the Dentons UKIME tax strategy and tax linked policies and working practices.
  • Recommending and implementing structural changes to manage the UKIME firm’s worldwide tax exposure.
  • Leading on the implementation of the necessary changes in working practices because of UK Basis Period reform legislation including the quantification of accelerated liabilities, consideration of transitional provisions, and the delivery of appropriate explanations to partners of upcoming changes and how it will affect them personally.
  • Developing and reviewing transfer pricing policies, maintaining supporting documentation and overseeing the annual global management charge calculation to ensure compliance with global transfer pricing requirements.
  • Providing advisory support around the tax implications of international mobility issues, consultancy arrangements (including IR35) and new/departing partners.
  • Managing the firm’s relationship with HMRC, including responses to risk reviews and enquiries.
  • Overseeing tax compliance for all UK and non-UK entities (primarily partnerships, some corporates) as well as the firm’s partners. Includes reviewing UK returns prepared by the in-house team and coordinating the provision of information for overseas compliance.
  • Managing the firm’s withholding tax exposure.
  • Constructing and maintaining partner tax reserve calculations, monitoring in-year releases and undertaking year-end reconciliations.
  • Project-managing tax aspects of new office openings.
  • Assisting other areas of the business to ensure that we are compliant in all areas of tax including sales tax, transfer pricing and mobility arrangements.
  • Reviewing the VAT returns for the region prior to submission (including using MTD software)
  • To attend meetings of the firms audit committee as required
Required experience, skills and attributes
  • CTA and/or ACA qualified
  • Previous experience at a Big 4/Top 20 accountancy firm or in-house in a professional services firm
  • Experienced people manager
  • Strong Excel skills and knowledge of Elite/3E would be an advantage
  • Outstanding numeracy and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)
  • Comfortable liaising with senior stakeholders and handling complex/sensitive issues
  • Excellent record of client service and delivery
  • Positive outlook and “can-do” attitude, with a strong sense of self-motivation
  • Proactive in taking on new work and identifying issues/opportunities
  • Keen to absorb relevant technical knowledge and commercial context
  • Strong organisational skills with a methodical approach to work with a strong focus on accuracy 
  • Takes full ownership whilst consulting/collaborating where appropriate
  • Practical approach in evaluating risk and making recommendations
  • Confident decision-maker and comfortable signing off
  • Can clearly explain problems and issues to others and contribute to their resolution
  • Able to prioritise and multi-task particularly when working under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances
  • Can demonstrate confidence and resilience to overcome obstacles to deliver what is required
  • Interest/experience in tax technology desirable
